After two months of collaboration between the Student Programming Board and ArtRUSH, the annual art show, ARThropology, plans to display the creative projects of students, alumni, Malibu locals and professionals at the Malibu Lumber Yard Friday, March 26 from 7 to 10 p.m.

The art show, which will feature music by DJ Chocolixxx and catering by Chocolate Box Cafe, is free of cost and includes complimentary valet parking. The hosts recommend cocktail attire.

Thirty-four artists will feature their original work, which will range from traditional oil paintings to creative videos.

ArtRUSH, a student club celebrating art, started three years ago.

“We work to put on art shows [and] celebrate creativity,” senior Susan Doe, a member of ArtRUSH and the Art Chair on the Board, said.

Doe said ARThropology will serve as an opportunity for students, alumni and locals to show each other what they have been working on and to show the Pepperdine community the talent they have.

Around 600 to 900 people usually attend the art shows put on each year, according to Doe. While the numbers consist mainly of Pepperdine students, Malibu residents also stop by. As the show was advertised as far as Santa Monica, the organizers expect a successful turnout this year.

Freshman Anna Sherod, an advertising major, will have her art featured Friday.

“[ArtRUSH] goes beyond just a club for art majors,” Sherod said. “It was fun to be able to do something creative and not have to be an art major to do that.”

Sherod shared her enthusiasm about getting involved with ARThropology.

“I’ve never been in an art show,” Sherod said. “I wouldn’t consider myself any kind of professional, but I enjoyed painting my piece and I’m excited to show it.”

Sherod discussed the sense of community created among all those who worked to put the event together, with her and ArtRUSH members doing everything from writing press releases, to on-site construction, to painting the backgroundon which the art will be displayed.

Sophomore Rachel Thor worked with Sherod on the public relations aspect of organizing ARThropology. An art and philosophy double major, she got involved in ArtRUSH because of ARThropology.

“It’s going to be a really cool event,” Thor said. “There will be a black-lit area. It’s going to be very modern, not stuffy or anything.”

Junior Sunni Downing worked on the food committee and helped to secure the Chocolate Box Cafe as the caterer of the event.

“They’re giving a discount on hot chocolate to everyone that shows up,” Downing said.
Downing, an art major, is a member of ArtRUSH and participated in their art show last year, but she said this show will be different.

“People are going to be able to go there and have a good time,” Downing said, noting plans for a live DJ and a dance show.

The artists are going to be in attendance, “all snazzed up,” and presenting their work, according to Downing, who will display original oil paintings and drawings.
